Growing information: NATIVE DECIDUOUS TREE growing to 9m (29ft) by 5m(16ft) in ten years. A small bushy tree which suits wet sites and tolerates chalk. Hardy to minus 40ºC, it is a monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, both sexes on the same plant), wind-pollinated tree, producing dark-yellow, 5–10 cm long male catkins with abundant pollen for bees; the female catkins are 2 cm in length and dark brown usually appearing later. Shiny green leaves are retained late into the autumn. Leaves are used in folk remedies for treating several types of cancer (the leaves harvested in the summer and used fresh). It will fix Nitrogen in the soil, improving the soil for other species around it.
